Macau
Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) that is located on the south-eastern coast of China, along the west bank of the Pearl River estuary. It is 60km away from Hong Kong and and 145km from Guangzhou (Canton).
The territory covers a total area of about 30.8 square kilometres, with a population of approximately 650,000. The official languages are Chinese and Portuguese, with Cantonese (a form of Chinese spoken mainly in southeastern China) being the preferred language for daily use. English is also widely used in business, tourism and commercial sectors.
Macao has recorded stable economic growth and low unemployment rate. The number of incoming visitors, retail sales figures and residents’ income have been growing at a steady pace in recent years. With higher disposable income, more and more consumers are willing to spend on quality products, but cheap imports from other Asian countries are still very attractive.
Macao residents are used to experiencing the culture and traditions of Portuguese-speaking Countries. The majority of western-style food and beverage imports comes from Portugal, but local consumers are very open to experiment new and sophisticated flavours.
